Setting up Petsafe’s electronic dog fence only takes a couple of minutes. Suggested locations for the transmitter include attics, closets, and garages. It can easily be plugged into a 110 volt outlet, and the radio signal can even transmit through obstructions like walls. Using the radio signal, the electronic dog fence will provide correction to the dog in case he crosses the boundary.
Here is a simple how to on installing electronic dog fences specifically from Petsafe:
Choosing the Transmitter Location
The transmitter should be set up in a dry, well ventilated, and safe location. Avoid locations where temperatures may go up the freezing point. Metallic surfaces or objects may interfere with the radio transmission, so your location should be at least 3 feet from any metallic surfaces.
Mounting the Transmitter
You can mount the transmitter on your chosen wall or on a wooden table. It should be 2 to 4 feet off the ground. You can directly plug the power cord into the transmitter and the other end to the electrical outlet.
Preparing the Collar
The collar in the kit comes with 2 pins that will apply the electric correction to your dog. Tighten the pins. You may need longer pins if you have long haired dogs.
In installing the battery, push the battery into the case; you may use a coin in doing so. Turn the battery slot clockwise until the arrow is aligned with the lock symbol above the case.
The collar, by default, is set to beep only, so you need to set the correction level to ensure that your dog receives the correctional shock. You may refer to the manual for variations in settings.
To do this, take off the cover on top of the collar and turn it counterclockwise. You will see the correction level button and hold it down until you see the LED light power on in front of the case. The light will flash based on the correction level you want. For example, if you want level 3 correction, the light will flash 3 times.
There are 6 levels in Petsafe’s electronic dog fence kit. Level 1 is a simple beep for more behaved dogs, 2 for a calm and timid dog, 4 for average energy dogs, and 6 for rambunctious and energetic dogs. Levels 3 and 5 are in between corrections.
Creating the Boundary
A circular boundary is created by the transmitter as it sends radio signals in all directions. Set it up in the area where you want your dog to be contained.
Set the collar level to 1 first and carry it to the edge of the chosen boundary. While facing away from the location of the transmitter, hold the collar to the level of your dog’s neck. You can let an assistant adjust the boundary control downward until the collar begins to beep.
You can use that setting as your boundary control. This boundary switch should be on “low” level if the nearest desired boundary is 45 feet or less and “high” if it’s greater. You can set up flags in the boundary and let your dog know that going beyond the flags means correction.
