When it comes to framing selections these can easily transform an inexpensive print or poster into something which appears to be an expensive art work. Select mat colors to enhance, not match your art. A double or a triple mat is ideal if you want it to pick up a color from the image. Keep in mind that top mats should be neutral while color is great for bottom mats. Getting double and triple mats will result in added dimension when framing.

Considering the mat width you should take note of the size of the piece and also the width of the frame. Width for the mat and frame should be different. From this comes about a striped pattern that detracts from the image. Considering the bottom mat of a double mat it should extend one half inch. All sides of the mat should have the same width for it to look good.

Take note of floating prints and images that may have distinctive edges. Attached to the front of your mat board is a floating print. With a mat board the image can get a border around it. Although a print with uneven deckled edges is not perfectly centered on the mat it is still okay. You can cut a mat and put the pieces on the edge of the print if there is nothing distinctive about the edges.

For framing photographs there are some hurdles to overcome. Should you have formal photographs including wedding photos and portraits you should go for ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes but simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames work well for art photographs especially those in black and white. When gold finished or cherry wood frames are used on black and white photographs there is competition.

For antique photographs complex framing is a good idea. Resort to silver framing when dealing with old black and white photos. Whenever you have sepia prints choose antiqued gold finished frames or wooden ones in mahogany, ebony walnut, and cherry. Including portraits and landscapes, traditional paintings are complemented by ornate mouldings and fabric liners. What works well for contemporary paintings are simple frames without liners.

Framing has a variety of purposes other than being used for prints, posters, photographs, and paintings. Old letters and postcards, fabrics, political buttons, theater tickets, christening dresses, or just about anything, else you have in your drawers and closets may be framed and hung in your home or office. In general the look for gallery style framing is minimalist. Here they use matte black wooden frames or those with natural finishes.

The frames have no ornamentation, just straight edges. Gallery style framing also features extra thick mats, usually 8 ply, in various shades of white. Around 5 inches is the measurement of the mat that might be placed around an image that is 3 by 5 inches big. The heavy mat makes the piece look important and the depth of the mat draws the viewer's eye into the image.

Especially for antique furnishings and reproductions elaborate wood frames remain to be popular. Affluence in the mood of the 1980s is represented by high sheen silver and gold frames but when it comes to the reserved spirit of the 1990s antiqued silver and gold frames represent this. Plenty of differences exist with industrial metal frames and the metal frames from the past. Other than brushed finishes with cross hatching, the new ones have cleaner lines and are much wider. Taking into consideration several framing options, these and earlier metal frames are economical.

It is because of famous photographers that art photography has been revitalized but it is due to restoration services that the restoration and framing of your family's own antique photographs grew popular. Increasing with time is the value of antique posters and even if they are expensive to frame they are still less expensive when compared to many original artworks. Other than loft dwellers these are beneficial to those with wall space to spare.
