The year is 1150 B.C., just before the sun rises over Buffalo Bayou in the region that would become Houston, Texas. You can hear a Cedar Waxwing hailing the days coming. Mosquitoes start to lift from the water like a cloud awakening. You jostle your buddies awake. A long day of battle is ahead of you. As you break camp, the bayou is changing shifts. The night guards lay their souls to rest as the day shift rustles about, busier and busier every sun rising minute. As you pack your gear, gentle wisps of dew glazed grass swipe your ankles, your calves, your knees and your buttocks as you kneel and shift through your morning ritual of work.
Flies are starting to bother your face like they are in love with you, nay obsessed with you and your magical Human features. The sun starts to glitter on the spots where the grass kissed you with dew. A light steamy fog rises directly with the sun. You better get a move on soon. You are traveling over difficult bayou country, with neither shelter nor safety in sight of a days travel.
Should you be camped out on the Buffalo Bayou in Houston, Texas today, you would awaken amongst a bustling city. You would still awaken early to battle traffic, to get through downtown before the dreaded swarms of mosquito and fly like automobiles move in, seemingly for the kill. Most likely, some grackle birds would squeak some emphysema cough like calls and coos vengefully to the morning smog ridden sky. Welcome to Houston, 2011. Heck, welcome to just about anywhere, 2011.
So, here is the deal. If you are tired of living in this trash ridden, smog burning, polluted, oil spilled wreckage torture chamber that we call civilization, it is now time to stand up and make changes. Those changes start with each individual being honest with themselves about how they are living, what they do on a daily basis, and how it affects them and their surroundings. It is also time for everyone to stop lying to each other about grand modern conveniences just to make a buck, buy hamburgers and french fries till your fifty five, start having major health issues, continue eating hamburgers and french fries with the air conditioning on full blast, engine running, meanwhile taking all sorts of crazy magic pills to fix problems that you actually need to make behavioral changes to fix. At this point, the western medical system becomes your worst wet dream. They get all your money and your body to do endless amounts of twisted masonic and devilish Dr. Jeckal and Mr. Hyde experiments with until you absolutely have no conscious connection to your body or any senses whatsoever.
This message, in particular, goes out to those in the construction and building industry. GO GREEN! Your role in society is so important. You make the homes we live in, the buildings we work in, the roads we travel, and, in pure essence, create the structures in which we live our lives. You electricians, or you who are thinking of becoming or are becoming electricians, keep in mind that your wires and systems deliver the precious shocks that power our lives. Get inventive, explore new territories by attending energy efficiency conferences and apprenticing with environmentally conscious builders. Strive to make our world a cleaner, less wasteful system of energy harnessing, storing and transmitting. Let this be the end of shameless self destruction, and the beginning of smart and lovingly built world which we would be proud to show aliens from another planet, or Gods of our own.
