Its no wonder that the number one fear all human beings share is the fear of public speaking. The idea of getting up in front of a crowd of people ad having all eyes on you can be daunting and down right scary. When its a group of close friends and loved ones it can be even worse which is why so many wedding speeches end up going south. The truth is that you don't need to be a great public speaker to deliver a great wedding speech.
A wedding is always a very special day and something that the bride, groom and all the family and friends will cherish for a lifetime. The last thing you want to do it to be remembered for a blunder. You don't want to embarrass yourself - which is why there is usually so much pressure on wedding speeches.
One of the biggest blunders I see brides, grooms, best men and even fathers of the bride make is that they don't prepare their speech. The best public speakers in the world will tell you that preparation is key. Write out your entire speech and make some cryptic notes that you can keep with you. No one will think funny of you if you have notes with you.
Trying to be funny is yet another massive blunder that is very common with best man speeches. For some reason the best men tend to feel that its expected of them to be funny and like so many people who try to be funny, the jokes go below the belt. Not only is it tasteless, its disrespectful and is something that does not belong at any wedding. Humor is good, but keep it clean and don't force it.
One of the biggest and probably the most common blunder is with drinking too much. Far too many guys look for confidence in a drink and because we all want a lot of confidence and courage before the speech, they overdo it. There is nothing as embarrassing as a drunk speaker - especially if the rest of the wedding party is still sober. Stay sober! A bad speech when you are sober is probably better than a good speech when you are drunk.
