Internet has leveled the playing field like nothing else. In the past big corporations were able to crush their competition because of superior money power. They could overwhelm smaller competitions with publicity blitz on newspaper, radio, TV and outdoor advertisments.
When Internet and search engines arrived, scene changed dramatically. Smaller businesses which were nimble footed soon used internet to their advantage and achieved success. Companies which started optimizing their websites by hiring a SEO Company became much more popular then big corporations on Internet. These companies started getting more traffic and sales than bigger companies and progressed exponentially.
Recently, the CTO of a big business group confided to me that a small rival company ranks well ahead of their website in Google search for entire range of products. To add salt to the wound, the rival company had its footprints in every social media platform.
The rival company was really looking hot & happening, ready to take over the world, whereas, this bigger company was looking like champion past its prime. It was a big blow to the company's ego and business.
The CTO was quite desperate to achieve results. The work was clearly defined - We want our website to be #1 within 2 months. As if this was not ridiculous enough, I was asked to estimate the sales that they will be getting in that period. And all this for a pittance because they are still testing the waters! The site in question had nil SEO done and was really dated.
I am sure, everyone must have encountered such clients who are not committed fully to SEO but want results desperately. A large share of the problem also rests with SEO companies which fail to educate their clients. They indulge in hyperbole and promise unrealistic results. When they fail, they fail spectacularly and SEO as an industry gets a bad name.
In such cases, I explain to the client, the whole SEO process over multiple meetings. It won't be an exaggeration to say that these meeting are more of a crash course in Search Engine Optimization then business presentations. Most of the times, the client is always wiser and aware of power of SEO. They are more committed to long term success of SEO and willing to wait for months to get results rather than trying to get quick and short term results.
Few times, the client is not prepared to accept the facts. They hire SEO Consultants who promise them results within unrealistic timeframes. Invariably, such SEO campaigns fail miserably with the client getting disillusioned with SEO and the industry getting a bad rap.
If you want to leverage the advantage of internet using SEO then I will advise you to be fully committed to SEO and not indulge in any half hearted measures.
