After years of experience in hanging pictures one could come up with certain rules. First, unless you've always yearned to live in an art gallery, don't hang pictures on every available wall space, hang a picture on a wall only if it seems bare without it. Hanging pictures can be done in groups, over a console table, a server, a sofa, or a small pier table.

Other than this a second rule applies. Avoid making the groupings wider than the furniture under it. If your pictures vary in size then you should hang them close together in order to achieve a unified look. For example, you may have a prized collection of bird prints but the frames differ in type and size. Avoid hanging them frame by frame and instead do so applying the concept of pleasing geometrics.

There is a third rule. Even with pictures hung in close proximity the wall acts as a frame that serves to set off a group of pictures on all four sides. Pictures hung in pleasing geometry means that they are arranged to form a square or even a rectangular formation. Should you possess four pictures all framed alike and of the same size it would look great if you hung them vertically above a small step table, geometrically in a square over the sofa, or in a straight line over a long table. In the absence of a staircase do not resort to the step pattern when hanging pictures. When it comes to the best pattern it is a straight line meeting at right angles. Considering a little regimentation it is not that bad sometimes.

Maybe you have been able to accumulate a collection of pictures over time including old family portraits, originals, prints, and reproductions. You should consider framing and matting everything alike to unify them when you plan on hanging them together. Not only did one friend matte 16 prints in forest green but gold frames were also used. The look was outstanding when set against a red wall. Resorting to a different color for matting each picture over her sofa a friend added color. The size and subject matter for all of the pictures here were the same.

Did you encounter a time when you stared into a department store model room but thought to yourself that it was bare? There is nothing that shows someone had ever slept, ate, lived, and took phone calls in such a room. The missing part is individuality. This will complete your home.

When it comes to a department store model the purpose is to sell furniture but the purpose of a home is to satisfy your comfort and pleasure. What matters here is that you use a color you like. Well, your color choice will affect the general mood of your rooms. Different colors relay different emotions. You should probably go and take a look at some color charts until you find colors that you are drawn to for your space. Follow your individual choice and you'll be right most of the time.
