We’re all about the best of the best, the super fruit, the ultimate discovery that will revolutionize the food industry, our health, our lives. We don’t want to muck around with common fruit and vegetables, we want the ne plus ultra, we want the maximum bang for our buck, and if it’s not loaded with anti oxidants, probiotics, vitamins, minerals, and any other number of names that we don’t understand but appreciate eating, we tend to roll our eyes and ignore it. Hence the constant race to uncover the latest miracle fruit from the Amazon basin, the rush to develop the ultimate genetically engineered monster vegetable. So, given our obsession, which amongst the known fruits and vegetables really is the best?

It’s a hard call, and any decision will ultimately be accused of being influenced by bias and frivolity, but in this case I believe a strong case may be made for certain fruits and vegetables, namely, the cauliflower and blueberry.

Cauliflower for several unbeatable and indisputable reasons, namely because it helps men reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. Research published in The Journal of the National Cancer Institute states that, “High intake of cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli and cauliflower, may be associated with a reduced risk of aggressive prostate cancer.” Furthermore, high intakes of this veggie are also associated with a lowered risk of lung and colorectal cancer.

But hold on kids, there’s more. Cauliflowers contain glucosinolates, which are said to prevent cancer by helping get rid of carcinogenic agents by getting rid of them before they can do any damage, and also help protect healthy cells from being infected. In fact, sulforaphane (a kind of glucosinolate) is activated whenever it’s chopped or chewed, which is fantastic because it’s an incredible detoxifier, and actually cleans out our bodies and removes harmful substances.

What else? Cauliflower is brimming with Vitamin C, which is great for our skin and the immune system. It’s also rich in potassium, fiber, and vitamin B6, which lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and help prevent heart disease, respectively. What’s not to like?

For women, you can’t go wrong with a blueberry. Tart, delicious, delightfully spherical, it contains a plethora of nutrients and benefits, is relatively low in calories and what’s best, may help prevent urinary tract infection (UTI). It’s a fact that almost half of all women will experience UTI at some point, so it’s great that blueberries, according to research performed by Rutgers University, have a compound similar to one found in cranberries (proanthocyanidin) which is shown to have anti bacterial properties—especially against the bacterium associated with UTI. Furthermore (there’s always more when it comes to blueberries) it’s been shown by research in the University of Michigan’s Cardioprotection Research Laboratory that blueberries may help reduce belly fat. True, this research was done on rats (I bet they were grateful) but still, how potentially exciting is that?

Finally (I got tired of saying furthermore) blueberries are also loaded with fiber, which women need lots of (21 25gr). It guards against heart disease, weak eyesight, cancer, and aging. It will also wash your car. According to Tufts University it contains anthocyanin (that’s what gives it that wonderful blue color), an antioxidant that makes it one of the healthiest fruit choices to guard against age. So, yes, blueberries will make you immortal. Or a little bit more immortal, which is nice.
