The growing interest in competitive racing and the increased focus on the benefits of running to increase fitness levels has created a greater need for the protection from runnings shoes. This results from the injurious nature of the sport. Harm can be caused by the repetitive force against a hard surface, instability of trails, and even the motion of the foot. Excessive load and overuse injuries represent a common occurrence in runners.

The recent trend in improving fitness has motivated people to take up jogging as a beneficial component to their exercise routines, which frequently develops into increasing speed to what is more often termed running. No longer simply used for rapid transportation, this sport has risen in popularity with the global growth of the marathon circuit and shorter races of many different distances. People everywhere now refer to themselves as athletes and runners.

As more people have begun to pick up this sport, so too have they begun to accumulate more frequent injuries. The drive to do their best forces them to push themselves beyond their physical limits through overuse and overexertion. Often this results in sore Achilles tendons or knees and shin splints. It may sometimes even carry so far as to cause a stress fracture to occur.

The efforts of shoe companies to combat some of these injuries exist in the provision of extra protection, occurring at different levels correlating to a runner's needs. These stem from the underlying causes of such traumas that include include ill-aligned foot motion, overload due to weight or wear, and bad form. Each has a shoe meant to help correct for it.

Not all people move the foot from forward to back in a straight line. Rolling inward slightly or a lot is called over-pronation, and is a common problem for many runners and places more strain on parts of the leg and foot. To combat this problem, shoes companies have come up with categories labeled stability and motion control. The latter is more applicable to those that are overweight or have a taller stature.

High arches are another reason that runners suffer from excess strain on the legs and feet. Rather than an appropriate dispersion of pressure from pounding, the force is greater on the balls and heels of the foot. Shoes labeled as cushioned have been created in order to help contend with this problem.

Trail running is practiced on a softer surface than that of traditional running on the pavement or concrete. Although the ground is much softer and the impact reduced, the decreased stability provides a need for protection on the sides of the foot and for the ankle.

Protection from running shoes against injuries caused by overuse, over-pronation and bad form is being pushed forward not merely to market new apparel, but as a means to combat the growth of injuries. This is a result of the technological advances being made to align with the increased interest in competitive racing and running to obtain fitness goals.
