IWC Watch Company, or the International Watch Company, was founded in 1868 by Florentine Jones, an American, with a dream to create a watch that had the craftsmanship of the highly desired Swiss watches, but was manufactured by American technology. However, after an uphill fight to break into the industry, it was not until Jones met with a man named, Johann Heinrich Moser, the pioneer for white coal in Switzerland, that Jones was able to move forward with his dream. Together, they began the first watch company in all of northeast Switzerland, creating their base in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
The company grew rather quickly, after he began renting his first factory in 1869, Jones needed to expand to a place that could hold more workers. By 1875, he had finished construction for his own personalized factory, the Baumgarten, hiring 196 workers immediately to begin in his factory for the expanding company. The motto and philosophy of the company was "Probus Scafusia," meaning "good craftsmanship from Schaffhausen." This motto is still marked onto IWC watches today, reminding the buyer that they are fulfilling a promise to them with their product. Jones was a man of his word, making sure that the company put out only the best quality product for its consumers. However, a good of a watchmaker as he was, he was not a good businessman, and was forced to sell his company in order to ensure its survival.
Johannes Rauschenbach-Vogel purchased IWC in 1880. Under his family's four generation reign over the company, some amazing things were accomplished. For example, it was not until his family's reign, specifically when after his 25 year old son, Johannes Rauschenbach-Schenk, created and began distributing a pocket watch with digital components, in 1885. These watches are now considered a rare collectors item and are extremely hard to find.
During the 1930's, IWC Watch Company became the first company to manufacture watches specifically for aviators. These watches included an nonmagnetic component. The Mark 11, in 1948, was fully protected against all magnetic fields, and IWC has since made this an important attribute to all of their watches. This was a historical advancement in the watch industry that they were able to call their own.
Quartz was not introduced into their industry until IWC incorporated it into their Di Vinci wristwatch in 1969. However, IWC decided that in order to remain profitable that they would stick to their core basics and continue to perfect the mechanics of their watches rather than the overall beauty. They wanted to ensure that their consumer had a quality watch, not just one that was pleasing to the eye.
Adding to their list of accomplishments, IWC Watches introduced the world's first titanium watch case and bracelet in 1978. Their watches, even today, have the most advanced system in completing this process. There is a pin that is located in each link to hold the bracelet in its proper form and to avoid any damage that can be caused to the bracelet.
Today, the IWC Watch company is one of the greatest in the watch industry, still holding its motto, "Probus Scafusia," close at heart during production. Their inspiration to hold true to the original make of their watches is a unique and great quality that all collectors can appreciate.
