As a kid I can remember going into the local 5 and dime or dollar stores with my parents. They seemed to have everything and from what I could tell my parents loved them. Back then the huge megastore wasn't really a thing yet and the local mom and pop shops still ruled the roost. What simple times those were. Needless to say as I got a bit older one of my girlfriends at the time used to love this place called Target. I hadn't heard of it before but from what she told me it had everything under the sun. Not only did it have everything but it was all incredibly cheap. Even the clothes weren't terrible. My girlfriend used to joke that her outfit was designed by tarje. Well that was many moons ago. Since then my eyes have been opened to the arguably wonderful megastore.
Of course when you talk about the megastore you have to mention Walmart, the big daddy of them all. Walmart has basically changed the entire landscape of retail in the United States. By being able to buy its products in such bulk it is able to keep prices for the consumer very low. It leaves the mom and pop stores at a huge disadvantage. There is almost no way they're able to compete and are usually forced to close which in-turn leaves the need for more Walmarts. Its a viscous cycle isn't it. Well im not here to do the usual Walmart bashing. Although there are many negatives of the mega-giant that is Walmart there are also positives. Lets take a look at some of these.
Creating Jobs - One of the biggest issues facing the country these days is unemployment. The entire landscape of the countries economy has changed. Jobs such as in the automotive industry and factory worker jobs are leaving the country. These used to be the core of the middle class in the United States. This has left a huge void and a lack of decent jobs in the country. Walmart is one of the few companies that is able to supply good jobs at a mass scale.
Charity - Walmart gives away an incredible amount of money to charities and other programs which help a huge array of people.
These are just 2 examples of Walmart doing good. In my other articles i'll delve further and into more detail about this. Im not one who thinks Walmart is great but I like to see both sides of the coin.
