Telemarketing (sometimes known as inside sales, or telesales in the UK and Ireland) is a method of direct marketing in which a salesperson solicits prospective customers to buy products or services, either over the phone or through a subsequent face to face or Web conferencing appointment scheduled during the call.
Understanding Telemarketing
In general the marketing function of a business could be either direct or indirect; this largely depends on how the salesperson will do it. Telemarketing is considered to be a direct method of marketing a product or a service, the salesperson will use a telephone to contact a prospective customer, and they will introduce themselves and then introduce the product or service over the telephone. The major purpose is to establish a rapport with the prospective customer and then to persuade them to purchase the product or service. There are two major telemarketing techniques employed, this is also known as telesales in the UK, one is business to business contact which means that the telemarketer will focus on companies and businesses for their contacts and sales, and business to consumer; this means that a business would contact housewives and other non business people for contact and sales.
A company may employ three methods of telemarketing, the first is to have salespersons working from their companies offices, the second is to use a call centre and the third is to outsource work to people who can work from home.
Companies can make use of two methods of telemarketing; one is to manually contact people by making use of telephone numbers of the prospective clients. Telephone numbers should be purchased from approved data providers where all numbers have been screened against the CTPS.
The second method employed by companies is a pre-programmed sales pitch which is played over a telephone; this is known as automated telemarketing, using this method the pre-recorded programme will dial numbers looking for answering machines to leave the pre-recorded message.
Telemarketing can also include recorded sales pitches programmed to be played over the phone via automatic dialing. Telemarketing has come under fire in recent years, being viewed as an annoyance by many.Everyone needs a means of getting a message across, and business people more so. If one is to succeed in business then the business person will need to inform customers about their products and services. The basic function of most businesses is to either sell a product or sell a service. There are various methods of informing people that you have products or a service that they may wish to buy or use. One method is to advertise, advertising can take on many different ways, and one method is to place advertisements in a newspaper, magazine, or other printed media that people may read about. Another method may be to set up a website and showcase their products and services, advertising online means that one needs to set up the infrastructure to conduct business online.
A company may also employ representatives who will call on customers and discuss their products and services, one can call on existing customers or do cold calling, where a representative will call on a prospective customer without an appointment.Business and sales people have another avenue that they can communicate with a prospective customer and that is to use a telephone. This method is called telemarketing. Many charitable organisation use a telemarketing campaign to look for funds for their charity, this can help charities connect with people who are sympathetic to their cause. Many political parties use telemarketing techniques to obtain information about voter preference and persuade the voter to vote for their party. Market research companies also use telemarketing techniques to garner information and opinions from people in all walks of life.
