More and more today we are seeing marriages in trouble. Many couples end up getting a divorce and still others seek help from a marriage counselor. Although any relationship can have trouble, there are a few factors that may add to marital stress.
Marriage at an early age
Marriage at an early age could be a major source of conflict in a marriage. Either Party may feel robbed of their youth though it might never be said especially if their expectations have not been met. One of the parties may feel a need to work hard to ensure the other person feels as comfortable as possible and that their needs are being met. This though may be very short lived. The key here is in not waiting too long before the couple recognizes the problem and seeks help.
Low Income Bracket
One partner may be earning a low income and this puts a strain on the relationship. This is especially true if it is the man. If this is the case and it has been prolonged, the other partner may feel taken advantage of (in this case the woman). This may lead to withdrawal effects and contempt of the partner that may seem to be not playing their role. This may eventually lead to infidelity because the woman may actually find herself confiding in another man who may take advantage of the situation.
Parents Divorce
The fact that either spouse was raised by a single parent as a result of a divorce may affect a marriage if it is allowed to. That is, if this person has not understood that he or she is in a different institution that is marriage, then he will not now how it should run. When either spouse compares his or her marriage with that of their parents they are affecting their own. With this kind of mentality, marriage counseling should be considered to help the couple change their perceptions of marriage.
Interfaith Marriage
This may not have arisen when the couple immediately got married but it may occur probably after several years into the marriage when either spouse has probably joined a congregation that may not have been approved by the other spouse. This can become a major marital issue when the couple has children. It is important for couples to work out how a child will be raised in regards to faith before the children arrive. This decision will help to avoid major stress later in the marriage.
Not graduating from School
Not only does not having a diploma significantly reduce the options for employment, it may also become a source of frustration and embarrassment later in the relationship. Being the best you can be for your partner is one way you show your love. This doesn't mean you need to get an advanced degree, but at least be able to provide a comfortable life for your loved ones. An education makes that possible.
As you can see, there are some factors that make it more likely that a couple will end have relationship troubles and possibly end up in counseling. Marriage counseling is effective and has saved many marriages – however, it is up to the couple to make it work.
