Bomber jackets were started around the 1900s in Europe. It began when bombers for the Royal Arms Corp were given leather jackets to provide better comfort and warmth during the war. This similar style was later adopted by the US Army Air Corp with some slight differences.
These jackets grew in popularity, so naturally the way they were made and designed changed a little bit. More varieties and fabrics were available for these jackets, and like much other military fashion, some were adopted for folks at home too. This caught on and was eventually done on a larger scale.
The original bomber jacket has many different styles today, coming in different materials, linings and colors. Most of them are black, red and brown, though. Some styles closely mimic the original design of the jackets from the 1900s, which are mostly brown. Some features of the US Air Corps A-2 jacket include features are mimicked very closely.
Not all jackets sold are based on the original designs though. When designed for women, these can change drastically. There are some flight jacket styles too, but designed in a way to flatter the female figure better. These jackets were not typicaly worn by and designed for women. If women just wore the men's cut it would definitely look out of place.
These jackets are mostly made from tanned leather. Bomber jackets usually look great, and are very comfortable to wear. Since most of these jackets are brown in color, it can indicated a more toned down, or conservative personality of the person wearing it. This is more like the original jackets that real bombers wore in the 1900s.
Another popular color these jackets come in is black. Black is very easy to match with other outfits. It can portray more of a serious, professional, or mysterious look depending on how it is worn. It can really change the mood of the military outfit you're putting together.
