Most of British Columbia has mountains, which means that the ski industry is alive and well in this province. Whether you enjoy alpine or nordic skiing, moguls or freestyle, snowboarding, or just hanging out at the apr?s-ski parties, BC offers it all.

Vancouver Island

Mount Washington and Forbidden Plateau are the two mountains where you can get above the clouds which perpetually cover Vancouver Island throughout the winter. I have never personally skied at either of these locations, but the reports I get from friends suggests Forbidden Plateau is the better of the two locations, especially if you have any degree of skill.

Vancouver Area

Whistler-Blackcomb mountain has taken the concept of a "destination ski resort" and shown the world how to do it right. Whistler Village provides everything you will need for your ski vacation from clothing to equipment, hotels, restaurants, and a bank just in case you need to get some more money from home to stay the extra weekend.

The combined ski hills provide enough runs with enough variety, that a person could easily get lost without a map, and it is a rare skier who could cover every run in a single weekend. Situated abut two hours drive from Vancouver, plan on staying on the mountain for about a week at a time, as opposed to traveling back to the city.

Watch the weather patterns closely in this area, as you are in a temperate climate, and sudden warming spells can play havoc with snow conditions. The management of the hill are very good about posting the conditions, but it is still your responsibility to read the postings, and to be aware of what is happening around you.

Okanagan

The Okanagan Valley offers excellent opportunities to test your skills, or enjoy a pleasant holiday. Crystal Mountain, just up the road from Westbank is a good hill for the novice to intermediate skier, but offers little for the black diamond enthusiast. On the road up to Crystal, there is arguably the best telemark trails in the Okanagan Valley.

Big White is Kelowna 's "Friendly Giant" and is situated about one hour's drive from downtown Kelowna. Big White offers everything from X-Country trails (second best in the Valley) to double black diamond runs. Snowboarders are welcome and the moguls need to be run to be appreciated. Lessons are available in either groups or privately if you want to learn the sport for the first time, or improve your style. Big White also offers restaurants, bars, a ski shop, rentals of everything you can imagine and an outdoor skating rink. If you want to book a condo to stay for a weekend or a week, better book soon because these places go fast.

Silver Star Mountain is located at the top of the Valley, less than an hour's drive from Vernon. Talk about getting away from it all! This full service mountain resort caters to the needs and desires of it's clientele. Runs to suit every level of experience, with lots of friendly people to help you out of trouble if you need it. When you go to Silver Star, be sure to take one of their sleigh rides, there is nothing quite like it, and can be very romantic.

Kootenays

Ever heard of the Red Mountain Riders? These superb skiers hail from the Rossland area in the west Kootenays, and spend six months of the year being challenged by Red Mountain. The pros here are more than capable to assist the terribly terrified novice, as well as assisting young athletes preparing for the Olympics.

Rocky Mountains

Can there be a better place to spend a winter vacation than in the midst of the most majestic mountains on the North American continent? Panorama, close to Fairmont Hot Springs is another full service mountain with everything close at hand for the vacationing skier. Hotel, conference centre, and banquet facilities are all available just a ski run away.

Fernie is known as the town which defines it's business hours according to the snowfall, and when the residents go skiing, its off to Snow Valley for the day. Up in Revelstoke, Mount MacKenzie provides enough snow for anyone to enjoy.
