When I first started article marketing it was an attempt to drive targeted traffic from my articles to my sales pages. Needless to say, I was disappointed. I started by crafting 10 articles, all well written, all search engine optimized, and all linking back to my site. I then sat back and waited for the incoming flow of new traffic from readers of my articles.
I was pleasantly surprised when each of my articles reached the first page of the search engine results. Eureka! Surely the traffic will come now. Unfortunately it didn't. My well ranked, well written articles each drove between 5 and 15 hits to my site a day.
"What have I done wrong?" I asked myself. I had great articles, all ranking on the first page, but they weren't bringing in anywhere near the amount of traffic that I thought they should. "Perhaps this whole article marketing craze is overblown hype," I thought.
But the truth is, I was going about my article marketing all wrong, and I was missing out on the true benefit of article marketing. You see, I was writing really great content and then submitting it to one or sometimes two of the most popular article directories. While this did bring in some traffic, it was dismal to say the least. I almost gave up on article marketing all together. The ends did not seem to justify the means.
It was a few months later when I decided I would make one last attempt at article marketing, but this time I used a new strategy. I was still going to write great articles, but instead of only submitting my works to one or two great article directories, I was going to use a mass article submission service to syndicate my article across hundreds of directories. And instead of expecting to see a dramatic increase in traffic from my work, I was expecting to see a rise in the search engines from all of my new backlinks.
It worked like a charm. My article was accepted at over 500 article directories. I had two backlinks per article which meant I had increase in over 1,000 backlinks for my submission. The backlinks were do follow, and from relevant pages. My site went from page 9 on the SERPS, to page 2. My organic traffic from search engines more than doubles. I had stumbled across the true benefit of article marketing: backlinks.
After a few more article submissions, I found my site on page one for a very competitive term and I've been submitting articles ever since. Years later I still find article submissions to be one of the most effective means of advertising a website. In order to perform well on the search engines a websites needs relevant, do follow backlinks, and that's exactly what article marketing brings.
If you've been considering article marketing as a strategy for your website it's important to realize that your article will most likely not drive huge amounts of traffic to your website. But if you syndicate your article across the 1,000s of directories that are available you will gain a significant number of powerful backlinks. These backlinks will help to drive your website up in the search engine results pages, and that in turn will drive targeted traffic to your site.
So instead of writing one article and submitting it to one directory, consider writing numerous high quality articles and syndicating them across 1,000s of directories. In my experience this will bring more benefit that any article marketing strategy.
