If you're new to MMA you might wonder what you need to make the most of your training, and prepare for competitions.

Find out exactly what you need with this guide to MMA Fightwear

1. MMA Gloves
MMA Gloves are designed either for sparring, or for fighting. Sparring gloves are like traditional boxing gloves, and cover the full hand, whilst fight gloves have individual fingers and additional wrist support to make punches more powerful and to protect the wrist. Look for a well fitting glove and help get the most from your punches.

2. MMA T Shirts
Whilst MMA T Shirts are not strictly essential, you will need to wear something on your top half whilst training and sparring. Why not show off your dedication to your sport by wearing your MMA T Shirts for leisure as well as training?

3. MMA Shorts
MMA Shorts are available as training or fight shorts. Training shorts are ideal for all aspects of MMA training, including sparring, running, weight training or even just for wearing on hot days. Look for pockets for keys and money, and some shorts even have an MP3/phone pocket, so you can listen to music whilst you train.

Fighting shorts are designed for competitions and need to cope with the rigours of MMA fighting. Look for additional stitching, extra grip, and true flexibility to allow you carry out your kicks and finishing holds with ease.

4. MMA Shin Guards
MMA shin guards help to protect you against leg attacks, and also help you deliver the perfect kick to your opponent. Look for plenty of padding to protect your legs.

5. MMA Head Guard
MMA head guards are not usually worn during competitions, but are vital for sparring and training. Make sure the one you choose has enough padding to protect you, and enough visibility so that you can still see.

6. MMA Bags
MMA kit bags are designed to hold all your MMA gear, so you need to make sure the one you choose is big enough. Easy to open zips and additional pockets will make finding what you need easy.

7. MMA Hoodies
MMA Hoodies are designed to be easy to take off and put on whilst wearing gloves. Look for additional zips on the cuffs and the waist to help with putting on and taking off. Your hoody is ideal to keep you warm whilst training or sparring, and can be worn between fights at a competition.

8. Gis
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu requires a traditional Gi rather than T shirt and shorts. Make sure you get a suitable Gi, as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is more physical than traditional Jiu Jitsu.

9. Grappling and rashguard tops
Grappling and rashguard tops are designed to be worn under your Gi, and help to protect against skin infections. They also take sweat away from the body, to keep the body dry and muscles warm.

10. Brands
As MMA becomes increasingly popular, many new brands and companies are getting involved. When looking at products, there may be many brands that you haven't heard of that are designed exclusively for MMA. Just because you don't know the brand, doesn't mean it isn't up to the task. After all it is your safety at stake.

If you are not sure what you need, or which brands to consider, why not ask around or look online. You're bound to find out exactly what you need, and where to get it from.
