When considering purchasing a notebook computer one of the first considerations is how it will perform in comparison with a desktop computer. In most cases, you'll pay much more for a laptop computer with similar technical specifications to a desktop. The main reason for this is purely down to size: it's more expensive to fit the necessary components into a mobile computer than the more generous physical capacity of a desktop. However, with today's computing technology and power, even laptop computers with lower technical specifications than their desktop counterparts definitely will handle all but the most intensive computing requirements of most people. Usually the one situation where notebook computers will have to have as high a specification as possible is if you're going to be doing a lot of video downloading and editing, for example converting and editing old family videos.

Some of the concerns to consider when looking at the differences between laptop computers and desktops are:

Portability: Not surprisingly laptops easily win over desktop computers in this respect but when looking at this area it's really worth thinking about how portable you truly want your personal computer to be. If you need to mainly use it in your home then you may think that a desktop is the answer. But a notebook gives you portability in the house too, which means that you can use your PC in many different locations within the house and even in your garden

Power: Even the cheapest laptop computers have sufficient computing power to carry out most of the tasks that almost all users need. But if you really want to have the same computing power as the most powerful desktops, then you'll have to pay a relatively higher price

Functionality and Performance: Again, because of their size, desktop computers have more room for equipment for example DVD and Blu-ray writers, multi-card readers and webcams. These can be offered with laptops but this may also increase the price and the weight of the laptop.
