Have you always wanted to learn a new language but fear that it would be too difficult? But it really isn't that hard to memorize a bunch of words, and this is mostly what learning a new language is all about, at least at the beginner's level. What happens is that you gradually learn more words and then the rules of grammar, and you find out it's much easier than you imagined. What often happens is that people find they can one day speak a new language without even realizing how much they've learned. When you start to learn French, or any language for that matter, it's important to find a method that works for you.

Nothing will probably help more than a set of good French CDs. Language learning CDs are great for helping you learn French because they are largely portable. If you don't use portable CD players anymore you can have the a CD turned into a mp3 file and then use your mp3 player to achieve the same results. Find a way to take your language courses with you. Doing this will enable you to learn while waiting in long lines, on commute to and from work, even while driving.

Learn to feel comfortable with feeling uncomfortable. If you take classes it will help you to remember that everyone is starting at the exact same point. No one will laugh if you use the wrong tense or make some other common mistake.

Everyone's a beginner! Some common problems people have with a classroom setting is fear of failure in front of other students, being self-conscious, or wondering what others might say or think when mistakes are made. Try to remember that in a beginner's class, all the other people are new to French. Try to avoid worry, relax, and speak French the best you can - mistakes and all. You'll have more fun learning as will your classmates.

Can you think of any community or neighborhood near you where the majority of people speak French? If you do, start visiting that neighborhood.

This is a great way to immerse yourself in the language and to learn French while still having an easy out to your comfort zone. You'll be learning directly from native French speakers, so your French will be just like it's supposed to be spoken and used. There's such an incredible difference between native French speakers and the language learned by just a textbook in a classroom of non-native speakers. Another great benefit is if you ever travel to France you'll feel much more comfortable.

Learning a new language, whether it is French, Spanish, Greek, Portuguese or anything else, does not have to be difficult. What you need is a language learning tool that is proven to take you from beginner to a fluent speaker smoothly and effectively.
