I've moved houses many times in my life and it seems to me that the newer the house, the smaller the rooms become. I always think that's odd because as a race we are all becoming bigger. My three kids seem like giants compared to me and my friends at their age. Not only do they grow up faster, but they also seem to develop preferences much earlier. And that extends to what they want around them, which, of course absolutely must reflect their personal preferences and choices.

My oldest son has inherited the tidiness habit from his father and is constantly de-cluttering his room. Unfortunately, though, his things just seem to get handed down to the younger two, who have simply never learned to say 'no thanks'. So while the oldest child's room is like a monastery, the younger children's room is stuffed like a toy store at Christmas.

I need not have worried though as we very soon found the answer to our storage problems in the vast range of cabin beds, or mid-sleepers available. These are excellent beds for small spaces as they incorporate so much storage space for all those things children accumulate so effortlessly. They are far better and safer than bunk beds, in my opinion, and much more fun. Many of them have desks and cupboards or drawers attached and great space underneath for storage or playing.

Cabin beds come in a huge variety of designs and are incredibly practical. Although they take up more floor space than bunk beds, they incorporate so much storage space that they actually free up space in the room. Added to this they allow a child much more privacy and independence, which is very desirable. When we suggested cabin beds to the children, they were thrilled.

There were so many designs to choose from that the kids spent hours happily browsing the net together and discussing the merits of each bed. I've never seen them so happy in each other's company for so long! Considering all the additional storage you get with each cabin bed, I thought they were surprisingly good value for money. Different designs come with different combinations of study desks, shelving, drawers, cupboards etc and in a wide range of finishes.

The younger two, whom we often refer to as 'Chalk' and 'Cheese', were surprisingly similar in their choices. They both opted for the same style of cabin bed but whereas one had pink detail, the other chose blue. Their beds both had pull out desks and clip on shelves and plenty of drawer space underneath. That was necessary given the size of their rooms.

The cabin beds were self-assembly, but not remotely difficult to put together. They were both done in an afternoon and the advantage of putting them together ourselves was that we then knew what parts to check once or twice a year to ensure the frames remained safe. We had no real fears about safety, however, as the frames were very study and sound and suitable for children much older and bigger. That meant they would last a good few years.

The kids are really contented with their rooms and so far have stuck to their word to keep them tidy. They love spending time in there and inviting their friends to play. I definitely think cabin beds were the best possible idea for their rooms, and I know the kids agree with me.
