There are owners who have eyes for only their horses, according to an artist from Walla Walla. They don't care if their horses don't win championships. An artist from a ranch on Springdale Road has taken advantage of this love and turned it into a business. She can be commissioned to either paint or photograph horses. Whereas the bulk of her experience has been with horse lovers' pets, she has also made renditions of famous horses, like a famous actor's championship endurance mount, Shur Raff Zi.
She enjoys her work, even if it is work. Her teenage self was attracted to horses in the first place. She started developing her craft in sketching at the age of 11. These experiences gave her a knack for shading that gives all her horse portraits depth. No two horses are alike, and she tries to bring out the uniqueness of each one.
For paintings, she starts by taking a photograph. She rarely makes sketches on the scene, unless it is a special little mark peculiar to the horse like when she makes notes on the horse's color. An accurate portrayal of their horses is often required by patrons. They will express preference for a particular angle or request highlighting a certain characteristic.
Some owners love their pets so much that they have facial expressions, wrinkles, and even cowlicks memorized. The more the canvas looks like the horse, the better. Different breeds and events, even barrel racing and cutting, have found their way to her pictures.
There are different rules to follow when taking action shots. Some angles of a horse cantering are unflattering. Horses in action are best captured with a telephoto lens, according to the artist. As many as 15 18 shows a year hired her services when she was still active in the horse show field.
She could practice both skills at some shows, where she would photograph winners and turn them into paintings. Those whose full time work is horse shows take dark rooms in their vans for instant photo development. On the other hand, this artist prefers her own dark room back home.
Her experience, however, does include other types of family pets. Since she isn't as familiar with the different breeds of dogs and cats, she usually needs a very good picture to work from, or see the animals herself.
Her experience makes her ill equipped to paint from imagination.
