Stripes are popular in men's attire; you could even don a striped collared shirt and striped neck tie as one, as long as you stick to the basics of dominant colors. Now look at pattern size, as one of the patterns must be smaller than the other. For example, if you were wearing say a blue shirt with small white stripes. With this design, your neck tie should be bolder, similar in color and have thicker stripes than the collared shirt. Sticking to this parity will assist your neck tie and shirt styles to look great and not overly busy to the eye.

Wearing a silk tie with an adventurous pattern such as paisley or a polka dot style can work with similar colored, smaller patterned shirts. However, if you are uncertain in your fashion choices, then a plain colored collared shirt in a similar color to the primary shade in the neck tie is an easy way to match them.

The Importance of Hue

Sporting the same color in collared shirt and tie, such as a dark blue shirt and necktie, can be a very sophisticated style. To pull this style off, you will need a silk tie that is a few shades darker than your shirt. Having a dark necktie in the same color will assist to create an important contrast and prevent you from looking overly matched and boring. Pulling this look off will count on getting the shades perfect.

A great starting point to build your wardrobe from is with plain colour shirts in black or white. A white collared shirt is essentially a blank canvas allowing you to get as artistic as you want with your neck tie. It is also hard to go wrong with a solid black shirt and any number of different neck ties. Starting with a solid coloured collared shirt can help you express your charm easier at the beginning, as there is no limit to neck tie choices (though please spare us from gag neckties...if it lights up, don't wear it!).

After you have the fundamentals down and have helped to train your appearance a bit, you can venture outside of the customs and try things for yourself. Developing your own style will come in time. Don't get too discouraged in the beginning. In the end, you will pick up the fundamentals by instinct. Learning these basics of how to pair a neck tie and a shirt together will help you in going from a zero to a hero in the fashion world.
