Nowadays, people are looking to find new finds comprised mostly of old things. There are a lot of innovative ways to make things appear vintage. Paints that end up giving objects a weathered look are readily available. There are plenty of individuals who have resorted to this kind of painting technique.
With my partner, we tried out the technique.
If you are into that vintage style, consider trying this technique out. What you will need to do a great job is a paint brush for latex paint, roller and roller cover, drop cloths, latex satin wall paint, crackle medium, and masking tape.
Put a base coat of latex paint and then leave the walls to dry for at least 24 hours. You might want to consider using a satin finish for the base coat so that another color actually peeks through the crackle finish. May it be in pints or in gallons, there are plenty of crackle finish sellers.
It is possible to find a project that calls for a single application of crackle finish. A single coat of crackle finish will not work for walls. Use the masking tape to mask off any section that you do not want the paint to get to. The paint should only be applied with a brush or roller.
To achieve a great finish on the walls, before applying the paint, cut in the edges first. Thirty minutes to one hour is necessary for the paint to dry well. One word of caution is that you need to apply the top coat of paint as soon as the crackle finish is dried. It is important that you immediately apply the top coat of paint when the crackle dries. There are two methods when it comes to the application of the latex satin paint top coat.
The surface of the walls can have fine cracks or large ones and the only difference between them is the utilization of a natural sea sponge or a regular paint brush. In this case, use a brush if you will be working on a wall. Painting your walls with crackle can be a tedious endeavor.
Going in a straight patterns, apply the finish at one end of the room. The crackle finish can easily be damaged if you run more than one coat of paint over the crackle finished wall.
During the time when we painted our own walls, we used long brush strokes, as far as our arms could reach, and went up and down. When we painted the walls, we started at one corner and moved to the next area afterwards. There was a lot of learning going on here. What you should never disregard is the manufacturer's recommendations.
