Why has there suddenly become an interest in making things look vintage? If you are into vintage objects, there is a trick to it. There are times when a coat of crackle paint is all you need. Here is a painting technique that a lot of people have been using.
Such a style of painting is a must-try.
You can follow these simple steps to make a new wall that will look old on purpose. Be sure to get yourself a paint brush for latex paint, roller and roller cover, drop cloths, latex satin wall paint, crackle medium, and masking tape.
Let the walls dry at least overnight after you put a base coat of latex paint. If you want to select a color that will show through the crackle effect in the topcoat, use a satin finish for the base coat. You can purchase crackle finish from hardware stores and craft stores.
Bigger projects require the crackle finish to be applied more than once. Working on one area at a time, apply the crackle finish carefully for large projects. If you do not wish for the paint to reach some sections of the wall, seal them with masking tape. Remember not to use anything other than a brush or roller for the paint.
For walls and the like, it is necessary for the edges to be cut in before the paint is rolled on. Thirty minutes to one hour is necessary for the paint to dry well. One word of caution is that you need to apply the top coat of paint as soon as the crackle finish is dried. Do not leave the crackle for a moment sooner after it dries. With regard to the top coat of latex satin paint, there are two possible ways of applying it.
One by using a natural sea sponge, which gives you smaller random hairline cracks, or by using a paint brush that will give much bigger cracks that generally flow in the direction you brush. It is still quite effective to use a brush for large surfaces like walls. Actually, this kind of paint job is rather challenging.
Start painting one end of the wall with a paint brush. One or more applications of paint after the crackle is applied will only cause the cracks to be erased and you will end up with a mess.
During the time when we painted our own walls, we used long brush strokes, as far as our arms could reach, and went up and down. One area at a time was how we painted our walls. It was about time for us to learn the ropes. This kind of project demands some time spent reading the manufacturer's recommendations.
