Originally nearly all vacuum cleaners were without a bag. nearly all vacuum cleaners merely used a cloth bag to contain the dust and dirt.

They leaked dirt and odors, but they were a lot better than using nothing at practically all. Subsequently paper bags were released to very dramatically cut down on the dirt. The paper bags were a huge development because they cut down on the odors kept in the cloth outer bag, and the filth and dirt could be thrown away without a dust cloud forming above the vacuum sweeper.

About 1985 the without a bag lightweight upright vacuum sweeper became popular. Originally, without a bag vacuum cleaners had a definite benefit over with a bag vacuums. The HEPA filtration system that all bagless vacuums use stops almost nearly all the dust and odors from leaking out the lightweight upright vacuum cleaner exhaust. The good news was that the HEPA filters stopped dust from spewing out. The bad news is that the clogged up promptly. They blocked faster if the air contained lots of humidity or if you were sweeping pet hair. The pet dander sticks to the filter and slows air flow. The slowing air flow is also the thing that cooled the motor. The motors in bagless vacuum cleaners tend not to survive as long as with a bag vacuums as a consequence of this limited airflow to the motor in bagless vacuum cleaners.
The two primary factors shoppers ask us about without a bag vacuum cleaners is: 1) They want to save money on liners, or 2) They want less dirt.

Without a bag vacuum sweepers need a HEPA filtration system to contain the filth. These filters are pretty efficient. They also need to be changed at least once a year (more often if you have little children or animals) and, they are not cheap, $29 - $59 each. It is not possible to spend as much for paper liners. High filtration paper liners will cost you a dollar or two apiece. You will spend less money on the paper bags than for the bagless filters, even if you replace the paper bags repeatedly.

A reduced amount of dust? Do you have waste cans at home? Do you use trash can bags? Why? Because it's much more sanitary when you throw out the liner instead of dumping the can with all the dust being thrown into the air. Most high end vacuums now employ micron filtration liners along with a HEPA filtration system at the exhaust of the lightweight upright vacuum sweeper. The micron filtration liners offer first-rate filtration, and they don't clog up and restrict airflow like the HEPA filters in bagless vacuum cleaners. The HEPA filter at the exhaust takes much longer to get dirty because the filth is trapped in the high filtration paper bag.

Less expensive vacuum cleaners are all without a bag. The profit is in the filters, not the disposable vacuum cleaners. The higher end vacuum cleaners almost all use high quality inner paper bags.

If you have dogs or cats, the pet dander is what sticks to the bagless HEPA filters. We additionally urge to pet owners that they use a lightweight upright vacuum sweeper with a charcoal filtration system to trap and neutralize the pet odors. Also, natural fiber brushes on your lightweight upright vacuum cleaner's roller brush will not trap the dog and cat hair in the roller brush.
