Many visitors to Boracay Island are happy to relax under the sun of the white sand beaches and admire the excellent view. However, the island is home to a very wide range of activities for more active travelers. Between June and September the winds are strong on the main White Beach, this is the low season as there is more rain and most resorts erect protective net walls to stop sand coming onto their properties in strong winds. The rest of the year is more pleasant on White Beach and the winds transfer to the back of the island.
These seasonal winds decide where the array of water sports on the island take place. In the low season most of the activity transfers to White Beach, this is a great time to watch the various activities. The most popular activity on Boracay is kitesurfing, one bonus to coming in the low season is that you get to watch the kitesurfers on White Beach. They transfer to the back beach of Bulabog for the rest of the year, it is a good sport to watch but it is truly thrilling to actually try it.
There is also windsurfing, paragliding, jet skis, banana boats, kayaks and wake boarding. Touts constantly offer you these activities (which is rather annoying), plus they offer romantic sunset boat trips on your own sail boat. They also offer island hopping tours with visits to other beaches and (very average) snorkelling. Scuba Divers are well catered for too on Boracay, there are many dive shops along White beach, but choose your dive sites carefully.
Other activities include horse riding and hiring a buggy or ATV to explore the island. There is a small zoo at the highest point of the island which is a great place for pictures. There is a small climbing wall in the D'mall complex, and the latest attraction is rolling down a hill in a massive inflatable ball which looks like fun.
The touts which offer many of these activities are very persistent, on busier areas of the island you seem to get offered them every 50 to 100 metres. Some touts will quote inflated prices, so it is always worth haggling or comparing different touts. If still unsure ask other tourists or staff in your resort.
After a busy day of activity the perfect way to unwind is to get a massage on the beach, there are many women offering this service. A one hour massage costs around $10 and is especially enjoyable just before sunset. Once sunset arrives happy hour at the bars and resorts makes sipping a cocktail a nice way to end the day. The sunsets are often excellent on white beach and it seems like everyone comes out to enjoy this time of the day.
