Domain Parking Defined
When you register an Internet domain name without the purpose of using it for e-mail or website or without putting any content on it, that is called as domain parking. Several reasons can explain why this is done by domain owners. Perhaps, they want to reserve the domain name for future plans of developing it. It could also be possible that domain parking is done to evade the chance of or engage in cybersquatting or the using of a domain name with malicious intent to profit from it.
Domain Parking Classified
There are two categories under which a domain parking can fall: non-monetized and monetized.
Non-Monetized. When a domain parking is non-monetized, what will display on the single-page website on the browser when you click on it is either 'Under construction', 'Coming soon', or any other similar equivalents. Some registrars or resellers can also opt not to put up any message on the browser. This single-page website is a domain name parked before a real and functional website is being launched.
Monetized. On the other hand, if a domain parking is monetized, visitors of the website can see advertising materials flashed before them. The registrant can then benefit from it as he or she gains profit in doing so. It is called the parked domain monetization. This practice is usually done by domain registrars or Internet advertising publishers which aim to gain profit from type-in traffic browsing through a parked or underdeveloped domain name. The domain name usually redirects to a page with advertising links and listings as its content. When a visitor clicks on any of the link, the domain holder benefits as he or she is paid depending on the number of links being clicked, using the pay per click basis. The keywords typed in by the user provides a clue as to his or her intention for visiting the site.
Other Domain Parking Uses
Another purpose of domain parking is to serve as an official bearer site for an already existing web site. The domain name registrant may opt to use this to redirect a domain name to another website also registered under his or her name. In this case, the domain is no longer 'parked', as it is already being put to use.
Domain names can also expire and become obsolete websites. These websites are often converted to use in parked domain monetization as they can still keep the inbound links before they expired.
As time progresses, there is an increase in domain parking companies acting as middlemen to provide a space for advertisements on parked domains. Advertising attracts money and the registrants will expect a guaranteed revenue from this kind of business setup.
Domain parking is one trend so as to keep a number of domain names. It works mainly for the benefit of the registrants as they can secure pieces of websites that they can develop later on for whatever purpose. Most importantly, domain parking is another strategy to keep the money coming from the online realm.
