I admit it - I'm a seaside freak. I absolutely adore going to seashores around the globe because, to me, each and every seaside possesses its own personality, nonetheless, virtually all have that same quality I like - the power to instill on the spot calm. That's right, even those bumpy, rough shores with the hard swells crashing around the pebbles can instill instant calm.
Somebody asked me last month if perhaps I were forced to select just one single beach front to see, which one would it be? The Algarve located in Portugal popped into my head. Okay, it's not only one beach, it's an area, however the Algarve is really diverse, it truly provides whatever beach is going to fit my feelings.
First, a little geography. Heading west, the western tip of The Algarve is the end of continental Europe. In fact, in ancient times the area was felt to be the edge of the world. So, when you're soaking up the sun on the beaches of The Algarve, it's fun to just imagine yourself at the edge of the world.
There are actually over one hundred miles of beaches in the Algarve! So, whatever sort of beach-going experience you desire will most likely be found. Starting on the west coast there are the windward beaches with large dunes. That translates to some incredible surfing. If you desire cove-type beaches which are more secluded, try the southern coast.
Certainly one of my personal favorite beaches within the Algarve lies south of Lagos on the western coast - Dona Ana, this is a group of coves. Dona Ana is just the perfect place to get lost in the beauty of The Algarve. I can just sit and think for hours. And, when I'm through sitting, it's fun to explore the many caves and grottos which grace the area.
Lagos is actually a sleepy beach community with almost everything you could potentially want in paradise. White beaches, private beaches, grottos, wine growing, a lively nightlife, modern conveniences and just about the nicest people you have ever met in your life.
