For some, how it looks is at least as important, if not more so, than how it functions. Fashion and flair may outweigh the need for strong traction of sure ankle support. For others, appearance is not so important, as long as the price is right and it fits comfortably.
Of course there might be other considerations besides the look at fit of the shoe. Maybe the planned adventure calls for something suitable for many terrains and weather conditions, or something that can be removed with ease for a quick swim in a stream. Serious walkers who intend to cover distance are aware of the importance of arch support. Unless you're sure of a particular brand you've worn before, selecting a shoe from a catalog may be less effective that shopping where you can actually try it on.
It can be an adventure in itself just nailing down which is the most suitable walking shoe, given the number of brands and styles that are available. If it enhances the journey, then it will be worth the effort.
