Self defense methods can be broken down into two main categories, proactive and reactive. While you may tend to focus more energy on one or the other, in reality you must practice a combination of techniques in order to avoid attacks and deal with potentially violent situations.

Proactive self defense occurs before you are physically attacked. You have more time for proactive self defense, and you are at a greater distance from the potential attacker. Perhaps you see a suspicious person, or someone is walking your way. What do you do? Because the situation is not violent yet, your first choice is to avoid any kind of confrontation. Walk the other way, into an occupied building if possible. Avoid eye contact or saying anything to provoke an attack, but be keenly aware of your surroundings and the situation as it unfolds.

Proactive self defense means that you have the time to put a strategy together. Identify the threat, and take steps to avoid it. If you think that an attack is imminent, reach a hand into your bag so that your self defense device, whether a pepper spray canister, a stun gun, or some other method, is ready for immediate use. If possible, use it as your attacker lunges at you, rather than after he s already grabbed you. You ll have a much better chance of hitting your target squarely if you are not trying to wrestle away from his grip. You are well within your rights to spray your attacker with pepper spray or hit him with the stun gun if a physical attack is imminent, and you ll have a much better chance of escaping the situation if you do so, rather than letting him be the first one to attack.

Once your attacker has made his move, you are then transitioning into reactive self defense. If your self defense only focuses here, you will be unprepared to fight off the attack. Your pepper spray canister may be in the bottom of your bag, and you may not have even realized there was someone following you. You will have no time to prepare at this point – all you can do is react to the situation. Your assailant already has the upper hand by using the element of surprise. It is up to you to shift the momentum in your favor, disabling the attacker so that you can get away. Because you cannot prepare first, your heart will be racing and you may freeze up, unsure what to do. You ll have a much harder fight ahead of you than if you had practiced proactive self defense.

When thinking about how you would defend yourself if someone tried to attack you, never forget about proactive steps that you can take to avoid attack. Being aware of your situation can go a long way towards keeping you safe. At the same time, you must be prepared to handle any potentially dangerous situation that may develop. Pepper spray canister or stun guns are essential tools for reacting to these types of situations.
