Before investing in any personal protection device, it is critical to explore your options, particularly their effectiveness and their limitations. Each type of device has its pros and cons. When it comes to buying and using self defense products, there are important rules to keep in mind. Here are the important dos and don ts to remember:

Do: Know your state and local laws when considering the purchase of TASER devices, stun guns, and pepper spray canisters. In some areas, there are restrictions on purchasing, carrying, or using some types of self defense products. If in doubt, contact your local law enforcement agency.

Research all of the options available to you. The wide array of self defense products on the market today offers something for everyone, but you must compare them carefully before purchasing your self defense devices.

Learn the self defense laws. In which conditions and situations is it considered legal or acceptable to use your chosen personal protection strategy? This step is critical in making you comfortable using it should you need to. Though it is legal to defend yourself against an imminent physical attack, there are limits on what you can do.

Learn how to use your chosen device. Know how to turn off the safety latch and how to use it against an attacker. Read any instructions that come with the device, and learn them by heart. In the heat of an attack, you won t have time to examine your device or think about how to use it.

Be aware of your surroundings wherever you are. Attacks don t just happen in “dangerous” areas; it is possible to be attacked anywhere, at any time. You must be ready to use your self defense device if the time comes.

Don t: Purchase a device before you know how it works. What if you realize that you wouldn t be comfortable using it if you had to? The best self defense device is one that you would realistically be able to use in a potentially violent situation with very little warning. Take the time to research the devices you are considering and learn about how they work before making your decision.

Play with or “test” pepper sprays, Mace, stun guns, or TASER devices. They are not toys, and they really do hurt, even if they do no lasting harm. Also, in many situations it may be illegal to use such devices if you are not in imminent danger. Never pull out your self defense product unless you are prepared to use it.

Forget your protection at home. Too many people take the important step of purchasing self defense products, only to leave them in the bottom of a drawer at home. Your pepper spray or stun gun will do you no good there! In order to be effective and available when you need it, you must make a habit of taking these items with you wherever you go.

Self defense devices are very effective when used correctly. Before purchasing them, be sure to read and follow this list of guidelines. After you have selected your self defense devices, there are also a few things to consider when it comes to using these devices.
