Everyone loves shooting their pets, proof is the fact that after children they are the most popular subject for photography. Your pets can be photographed perfectly by following these tips. A longer telephoto lens of 80 to 200mm size is appropriate for shooting pets and offers ease of use compared to standard lenses.

With a telephoto lens you can stand back at a comfortable distance and get good pictures without having to move in so close that you scare off your pet. By keeping a low profile while shooting, one can get natural shots of the pet. If the photographer clicks the pet from his level, he would get a great picture. Being on our hands and knees is the only way to get good pictures since most pets are smaller than us. A photo that has the pet looking straight into the lens is worth the effort.

The only way to click your pet is if you are quick and ready. The exposure must be pre-set and the pet already on focus in order to be ready to click the picture. Rechecking the focus or the metering should not be done.

While shooting pets, it is easy to get the right exposure. Simply use the camera on automatic or set the exposure recommended by the light meter in your manual camera. Bracketing is important for anyone who owns a very dark or a white animal.

When photographing a white pet, you can open up one or two f stops after taking the meter reading. To capture the dark color of a darker pet however, we must drop the f number a few stops.

The answer to what needs to be focused is very simple. Getting the pet's eye in focus would take away the attention from the focusing on the rest of the pet. If, however, the eye is out of focus, the picture will not be appealing.

If focusing on a dark eye surrounded by dark fur, focus on the highlights in the eye. You can do this by turning on a light in the room or turning the pet to face the sun outside. One thing that can ruin a good pet photo is the background. Utilize a plain background when positioning your pet. The simpler the background, the clearer the pet would stand out.

Having a friend nearby while you shoot the pet is a good idea. Picturing the animal when your friend has his attention is a better option. If the pet is the kinds that trail you with curiosity to find out what you are doing, then this method is particularly useful. Using these tips coupled with patience your pet pictures would be perfect!
