One of the worst problems that Vegetable grower face is weed control. There are weed solutions, both chemical and organic, that work to a point but generally there's always some area that escapes or stubborn weeds that refuse to disappear. To get rid of the weed problem, one of the best options a gardener has is to use a weed control fabric.
If you are completely redesigning your garden, including flower beds, paving and decking, then clear off the entire garden and before starting to create the individual sections, lay down weed control fabric over the entire area. This will mean that there is 100% coverage stopping weeds from reappearing among your roses and/or herbs. You can even use the fabric to stop weeds growing up in your greenhouse by placing it as a groundsheet in the greenhouse before constructing the greenhouse on top of it.
Weed control 101
Putting the weed control fabric under the path means that you stop the need to remove weeds that spring up between paving stones or slabs. The path will always appear neat. It will also make for a good foundation on which to place the paving stones when you first put them down. If you are building a patio area, then again putting the weed control fabric down before you place the stonework in position will mean that your patio is always weed free. If possible run the fabric slightly up the outer edges of the patio area, if you are going to build a dividing wall put it under that too, so that you alleviate the problem of weeds poking up at the side of the stonework.
Weed control fabric works by blocking out the sunlight, which in turn kills the weeds. Apart from the fact that it stops the weeds coming up, it has an added advantage of not filling your garden with any unwanted chemicals. It's a perfect method of environmentally controlling your weed problem.
The better choice
The downside of this kind of fabric is that it will not allow the sun to get through to help things grow. There is another type of groundsheet called landscape fabric which is a perfect choice for areas such as flowerbeds where you don't want weeds, but do require the natural nutrients to be replenished. With this landscape fabric both the sunshine and the rain can get through into the soil and keep your flowerbeds healthy, but the weeds are unable to break through from the other side so you still keep your work down to a minimum.
Weeding requires a lot of effort and no sooner do you get rid of the weeds, and they're back! By spending a little time and money to put down groundsheets however, you can alleviate this thankless chore completely. Instead you will be able to spend your time relaxing in your beautiful garden safe in the knowledge that there's no weeding to be done!
