However, these misguided young people are merely continuing an age-old tradition, if they only knew it. In ancient Greece, the type of sandal you wore showed all onlookers your social standing and even your choice of career. The mythical god Mercury had wings on his sandals, leading one to wonder which came first, his mission or his outfit. Cinderella may never have gotten into the hearts and minds of many generations of would be princesses and prince charmings if she had worn lace-up slippers or ones with an ankle strap.

Those who make out-of-the-ordinary creations for men and women to wear can have lucrative careers and international prominence. Stuart Weitzman would have remained a low-profile businessman if he had not abandoned his college major for the thrill of joining his father in the manufacturing business and deciding to make shoes as beautiful as the women he made them for. Now he employs many artisans in Spain, creates high heels out of everything from cork to diamonds, and prices them from just under two hundred dollars to two million.
Even assembly line footwear can be beautiful, however. After all, it is the eye of the beholder that is the deciding factor. For a toddler, a bright pair of jellies in neon green can be mesmerizing. How about those sneakers with flashing lights that only come in kid's sizes for some discriminatory reason? Sequins and glass jewels can adorn flats and sandals, while the Chinese really know how to embroider a slipper. Finally, every prom dress needs the perfect accessory, which may be a memory that the wearer will never forget.
The manufacturing and retailing of footwear is a massive industry. Then there is the whole after-market world of thrift shops, yard sales, repair shops, and clothes for the homeless drives. Closet organizers are another spin-off, as are polish, shine kits, and dying products. Don't forget insoles - Are you gelling today? How about all those who depend on all the past good ideas and design ingenuity for help in sports, running, jogging, walking, and playing golf, as well as not slipping off the deck of the boat or across the wet kitchen floor in a restaurant?
Of course, foot gear may be important just because they ease the path of life from one spot to another. Walking barefoot on the rocks or in cold weather can get old fast. Let's hear it for beautiful shoes!
