Things can go wrong with an RV. You may have heard stories of a bear momma and her cub deciding to go eat out in someone's RV. Or of RV's breaking down in the middle of nowhere, of RV's sliding down a mountain. Such things happen, even the bears taking over RVs. There's no way you're not going to insure your RV. Can car insurance be enough?
RV's are houses on wheels. You need special insurance. Vehicle insurance coverage varies depending on which insurance company underwrites the policy. But none will cover everything that can go wrong with an RV. For instance, if your RV gets damaged while you are on a trip, car insurance will not cover motel. Which may put an end to your vacation. On the other hand, RV insurance would cover that, up to a certain limit. You might still be able to enjoy your vacation with no additional hotel charges
RV's that are totaled or stolen that are covered with car insurance aren't protected against depreciation. You'd get actual cash value. With RV insurance the amount would be different, it would be the amount you and the insurance agreed upon when you took out the policy. Damaged or stolen expensive items inside the RV (laptops, TV's, for instance) would be covered with RV insurance but not with car insurance. And what happens if your RV needs repairs 500 miles away from home? Fixing it where it broke down might take too long, towing would cost a lot.
So, you do need RV insurance. But what should your RV insurance include? It should include the following:
1. Roadside assistance with extended towing.
2. Several settlement options - Actual Cash Value, Agreed Value and, maybe Total Replacement (depending on how old your RV is).
3. Personal liability (just in case someone gets hurt at your camp site).
4. Personal items coverage - because you will have some items you'd feel sorry if you lost.
5. Coverage for appliances and RV systems. No, they're not automatically covered by everybody.
6. Acts of nature. You don't want to lose everything just because of a flood or wind.
Since not everyone has a trailer, I'll not number it. However, if you do have one, make sure you get coverage for it too.
Of course, you want the best RV insurance and you don't want to overpay. But you do want it. Or should, anyway. Car insurance just isn't enough.
