If you are in the market for a metal detector, make sure to research what types of features each one offers before making a final purchase. It can be a lot of fun to take on the hobby of metal detecting, but if you buy the wrong type of equipment, it won't be very exciting.

The first thing you should think about is the price of the metal detector itself. You can expect a metal detector to cost a lot of money if it has all the bells and whistles. If you don't need these advanced features, than a cheaper model will be fine for you. Depending on the features you get, most detectors will cost you anywhere between $50-400. Beat Frequent Oscillation (BFO) is used in some of these units. This type of technology is made up of two wire coils.

Two wires represent the two coils, both the smaller and the larger coils within the control. The larger sized coil is located in the detector's search coil and the smaller sized one is located in the System Control Pack. An oscillator which is used to create pulses of current is connected to these two coils. These currents go into the coils and create radio wave emissions.

The System Control Pack contains a receiver which picks up the incoming radio waves which it then turns into a collection of tones derived from the radio waves' frequencies. The metal detector is engaged by a magnetic field that results in frequency interruption after one of the coils runs into a metal object. A change occurs in the tone that comes from the receiver when this happens. The most highly functioning detectors will be equipped with BFO. Believe it or not, despite its accuracy, this technology is low in cost and very easy to use.

Other detectors rely on PI or Pulse Induction technology, which utilizes either a series of coils or a single coil that works as both the transmitter and the receiver within the detector. Magnetism is caused when short electrical bursts pass through the wire or the coil of the detector. If these electric currents are impeded, the polarity created by this magnetic field will switch.

When a sharp spike in electricity is created, more pulses are created as well. This cycle will repeat itself similar to that of an echo and will produce a varying report depending on what kind of metal was detected. It must be noted that this detector does not work well if you are trying to distinguish between different types of metals or coins in your search. This would be best for regions in which metals and salt-water may easily be detected.

Very Low Frequency of VLF metal detectors are equipped with two search coils. The function of one of these coils is to quickly transmit electricity while the other one serves as a receiver. As is implied in the name, this coil's function is quite apparent. It's function is to receive the frequencies that the detected object sends back. This particular metal detector would be ideal when it comes to searching for various metals.

No matter which metal detector you decide to go with, you are guaranteed to have paid for it because you will surely find those coveted relics, rare coins or recovered jewelry in no time.
