Now more than ever, the replacement of traditional incandescent light bulbs with energy saving light bulbs throughout the home or business premises, is one of the most popular energy saving activities. Energy efficient light bulbs are thought to be an easy way to save energy and save the environment in the process. Many people find that considerable financial savings can be made over a year. There are also fewer light bulbs to change, and therefore less waste.

Smaller independent businesses like public houses, Bed & Breakfasts and holiday homes are constantly looking for ways to cut costs in any way they can. Day to day lighting and electricity overheads can be large, so energy efficient lighting throughout the business is a popular choice nowadays. Display lighting and outdoor lighting can be a vital aspect to this type of businesses success. For example, outdoor signage that needs to be illuminated for long periods throughout the day, every day of the year. Until recently, there was not really a viable energy saving solution for this type of issue, though now there are many effective low energy outdoor light fittings and bulbs.

One type of energy saving bulb available is an energy efficient floodlight bulb. Usually, a floodlight fitting with bulb would be used for outdoor use, lighting open areas or a specific display. The most common base fitting bulb for floodlights is a halogen bulb with an R7S fitting. There are now energy saving floodlight bulbs available which fit directly into an R7S fitting, and many premises are making a convenient switch to low energy lighting. The first obvious advantage, is that the new low energy bulbs use a considerably lower wattage than a halogen bulb, (for example 40 watts), and can last up to 8 times as long, whilst still maintaining the brightness of about a 200w halogen. Another advantage of using energy saving floodlights, is that often, more than one floodlight will be used when considering outdoor lighting, so where each halogen floodlight would use 200w per fitting, the energy savings a premises can make can be very noticeable. This equates to substantial financial savings. Energy efficient coloured floodlights are also an option for themed businesses with certain displays and are becoming increasingly popular.

Energy saving floodlights are now a sensible power saving option throughout the UK and Europe. With a long life and switch cycle, they can save up to 80% energy usage and help reduce electricity bills.
