In Greek 'Gyne means woman and 'mastos' means breast, and so the technical term for extra breast tissue on the chest in males is known as gyencosmastia. Without the ancient Greek jargon, most people know it as man boobs. Man boobs can result from different issues in the body but mostly from either an excess of fat, such as in obese men or from a hormonal imbalance.
There are natural hormone imbalances in times like adolescence. It is not uncommon for boys at puberty to bud small breasts and feel lumps near or under their nipples, but these usually vanish with time. Boys with a little extra weight are more likely to have breast development, but slim and healthy boys can also experience it. There are generally no associated health risks for adolescent man boobs except the social stigma often associated with the condition. Boys that have man boobs will often isolate themselves from their peer group and avoid social situations that involve taking off their shirt like sports of beach activities.
Man boobs can also be the result of a side effect from prescription medications, or from drug and alcohol abuse (marijuana, methamphetamines and beer are big ones) as well as diseases that can have man boobs as symptoms like certain cancers and liver disease.
There is another epic cause of man boobs which is far more problematic to deal with and can become a permanent problem if left untreated needing surgery to remove the male breast tissue. Anabolic steroids are the big baddies when it comes to leaving behind a nice pair of man boobs on once bulging pecks - they are leading men into epidemic proportions of gynecomastia. Steroids wreak such havoc on your hormones that they cause man boobs far quicker and more drastically than natural hormonal fluxes. Man boobs that are resultant of steroid use are also more stubborn and if left untreated may actually develop into permanent tissue which can only really be removed by risky (not to mention hard on the hip pocket) male mamoplasty, which is not a great option for any man.
It is really not that uncommon for steroid using men (especially young men) to find that what they wanted to give them big strong bodies actually gave them feminine breasts, oh dear. Breast will develop because of the way that steroids disrupt the balance of estrogen and testosterone in the body. Steroids work by inhibiting the body's natural testosterone, so when a cycle is finished and a steroid user doesn't put testosterone back in the system then huge levels of estrogen will cause buddy breast and feminine hips (lovely love handle!) to develop. Not exactly the look steroids users would be going for, but a result of steroids nonetheless.
After ceasing steroid use it can still take quite a while for the body to start its testosterone production and in many cases even after hormones are back to normal the breast do budge. This is one of the biggest differences in steroid induced man boobs - they are notoriously hard to eliminate.
There is one very easy solution, and that is to stay right away from steroids, and if you think about the other associated risk like shrunken testicles, looking like a stocking stuffed with tennis balls and our lovely flabby boobs there are plenty of good reasons to do so. For those silly enough to persevere with steroid use there are estrogen blocking drugs that can help stop breast development. These are often used by body builders, however these drugs have not been fully studied, so there may well be other side effects of these blockers which will cause another unsightly syndrome.
Given the proper treatment, man boobs are very receptive and if you aren't on steroids you may be just a few months from getting back your manly chest, because there are plenty of options for trying to reduce man boobs. For those with man boobs as a result of steroids, don't think surgery is the only way, try as many natural ways of eliminating your man boobs for good before opting for costly and risky surgery that might not even solve the problem.
