Mice are just like keyboards in the fact that they hook up to your computer via USB port or PS/2. While Ps/2 mice are generally cheaper than USB they are a bit less compatible, the only real advantage of a ps/2 mouse is if all of your USB ports are full, but even if that is the case, you can convert a USB connector to a PS/2 connector with the right attachment. USB mice are also hot swappable, which means that you can unplug them and plug them back in while the computer is on and they'll still work. Laptops never have PS/2 ports, so if you wanted to use a nice mouse instead the frustrating finger pad, the mouse would have to have a USB connector.
There are only a few different kinds of mice, but it's nice to know your options so here they are. There are mechanical mice; these are the old school mice with the little ball inside that rolls around as you roll the mouse around on the table. These can get a bit frustrating, especially if you have a less than pristine mouse moving surface, because the little ball will suck in all of the dust and crud and it'll build up on the inside, and eventually your mouse will start jamming up, making even simple tasks annoying. With these old timers you're going to want to clean the insides periodically, I would only suggest these if they're your only option or you're strapped for cash. Then there are the greatest advancement in mouse history, the optical mouse, these come in two versions, the LED mouse and the Laser mouse, the laser mouse is a bit more accurate, but both are good buys, these mice have optical sensors that take pictures of where they are hundreds of times a second, then they compare those pictures with the last picture they took and then make sense of where they've moved to. If you are into the whole laptop thing, you can actually get external touch pads for your desktop, that way you don't even need a mouse. Then there are all kinds of wireless mice, but a lot of them are battery hogs and others get awful finicky if they don't have a clear view of the usb port they are wirelessly plugged in to. No matter what mouse you get I would definitely suggest a scroll wheel; these are extremely convenient for navigating different pages.
