In our lives, music is the voice of our heart. Personally, I wanted to be that voice, I wanted to bring happiness to the people around me. Deep in me wanted to share my hopes and my dreams. The truth of the matter is that, singing is the only real thing for me. Sure there are a lot of things that are real like love, justice and freedom. However, music has it all. Music is love for individuals who are unable to show what is inside of them. It is freedom for people that are suffering from social injustice. And finally it is justice for all human kind, for in music we are given the chance to have a creative outlet for our ideas.
Like some other people, I was raised in a not so ideal neighbourhood. My home is just a door way from violence. Money was a bit hard. My mother had to work hard to send us to school and give us good future. She send us to a local church’s free vocal lessons program. Other children have begged their way out of attending free vocal lessons. But not for me, because it was a heaven sent, simply because i love to sing.
The free vocal lesson was headed by our local church to extend themselves to the community. We all have the notion that the church is only for the rich and powerful, but we were wrong. They do really care. To keep the people from wrong vices they established programs to divert people’s attention.
Through the free vocal lesson program, I learned how to sing properly. I found out that there is more to singing than belting and yelling. Yes, i have dreamed of becoming a great singer, hitting those high notes with minimal effort. But that dream of mine thrashed when i started doing the vocal lesson the proper and right way. There were a lot breathing technique to master, notes to hit and most importantly to understand. In that vocal lesson program i also learned about discipline. I quit my vices and on a positive level, my singing ability was improved because i was already healthy.
Singing was only an opportunity presented to me for a better life. Ever since then music has been my passion, if not only for the glory it brings. With the free vocal lessons brought by the local church to me and my neighbours, I not only glorify myself, but most importantly god as well. It is only right for me to use my singing talent to spread his love and goodness to human kind. I now sing in our local church choir every Sunday. And before i know it, I am now the one teaching the next batch of children who were lost in vices and poverty. I strongly believe that someday, the free vocal lesson program offered by our local church will have a great impact on the lives of the people living in our community who are right now blinded by the not so good happening in our place.
