if you know how to figure this out for your computer's hard drive, doing this for your computer's DVD drive should be an easy task. The best way to figure this out is to open up your computer and see for yourself. What you going to do is look at the cables that come from your computer's motherboard. This is the large flat circuit board that has a bunch of chips and cables in it, then follow with your DVD drive. If the drives cable is small, the new computer uses S ATA drives, if it's the flat ribbon cable. The new computers using an IDE drive, with the right adapter. These two drives are interchangeable, supposedly cost you anywhere from $10-$20, and the performance may not be the best, but it works as a good quick fix.
Next you're going to take a look at your computer's power supply, this is the big box in the corner with all the wires coming out of it,, if the cable is black,, if the cable is black, then this usually indicates an S ATA power cable, if the cable is black, then this usually indicates an S ATA power cable, if the cable is white, and this usually indicates a Molex connector.
