We have discussed in my other articles about how beneficial the career of software development in, but in this article, I am looking forward to shedding some light over few of the drawbacks that software development career has.
Technology Changes: We all know (especially those that are related to software development) that software industry, infect the whole of the IT industry is all about change. Software industry is changing constantly, and software developers feel the need of learning new stuff and stay up to date with the new technologies more than any other professionals. There are new programming languages coming in the market each month, new frameworks are being introduced, and all this is happening at a very rapid pace, not allowing development professionals enough time to keep them up to date. It is a very hard fact that what you, as a software developer know today, can become obsolete tomorrow and will be of no use to you or your career. Being in this industry is a little easier when you are young, enthusiastic and single. But for a married person having kids, it's not that easy.
Industry`s Ups and Downs: All industries face ups and downs, but software developers get hurt much more than any other professionals. The biggest reason of this is that Software development is only considered as a "Good to have" kind of thing, and not a must have a thing to run the business. So whenever there is a down turn in the economy, software development jobs are the first ones to go. Furthermore, in those down times, the competition to get the job become fierce, a lot people that are fired during the down times, are not fired due to bad performance, but due to the budget reasons. This can even make a very experienced and seasoned software developer to search for a job like a new person. This may result in two things only, wither you will be more than extra ordinary to keep your job or get a new one, or you will be forced to work on a much smaller salary.
Health: As a software developer you can very easily forget about yourself and thinking about your work all day long. Sitting on the PC for 10 hours a day can make you fat, weak, lazy and sick very easily, and if you don't work out regularly, it all will start to show.
Keeping in mind the above drawbacks, I can recommend you to join software development career only if you are ready to work your hardest, ready to face challenges of downward economy, and if you really love doing software development. If you lie among those people who are passionate about software development than you surely will have a prosperous career.
