At least once in every little girl's life, she dreams of someday becoming a lovely bride. The image of the blushing bride is so ingrained into her consciousness that once he proposes and the plans for their wedding get into full swing, the excitement - and the pressure - of finding the best wedding dress is foremost in her thoughts. She wants the perfect look; he wants the perfect price. Luckily, there are ways to satisfy both.

The hunt for a wedding dress starts with research. Look through bridal magazines and websites and bookmark dresses with plenty of potential. Have an open mind at this point. Don't set your heart on one gown immediately, as dresses which look good on a model might not flatter your particular figure and conversely, those you're inclined to discard at first glance might turn out to be just right for you. Knowing the cuts and styles which highlight your assets will narrow your choices down.

If you have difficulty choosing among the many bridal dresses you've seen, ask for opinions. The mother of the bride, the maid of honor, and the bridesmaids can be of particular help here. You can also solicit the help of a bridal consultant. As trained professionals, bridal consultants have had plenty of experience with wedding dresses. Remember, however, that their ideas will serve as a guide, not as a rule. As this is your wedding, the choice of a dress should ultimately be your own.

It's a must that you know how much you can spend for a wedding dress before you even begin browsing through shop selections. This will cut down on the overall time you will spend in bridal salons, as you will not have to bother fitting dresses which are out of your price range. A rule of thumb in setting a ceiling price is that the whole ensemble - dress, shoes, and veil - must not cost more than 10% of your reception expenditures.

Once you've determined how much your dress will cost, arm yourself with three things: pictures of your choice dresses, a friend, and a camera. The first is for you to show attendants what kinds of dresses you're looking for within your specified price range. The second is to have someone with an unbiased opinion tell you the pros and cons of the dresses you try on. The third is for you to have pictures to review once you've done your rounds and are ready to make a choice.

Try to set weekday appointments for visiting bridal salons. Salespeople with more time reserved for you will tend to be more attentive to your needs.

Keep your eyes peeled for year-end clearance racks and for any discounted, discontinued styles. It helps to keep your mind open for less traditional alternatives that might still work, such as white prom dresses. You can also score terrific deals when bridal chains hold large sales; the trick in this case would be to come as soon as the shop doors open. Shopping online for a wedding dress is another good idea, as you're likely to find quality knockoffs of designer dresses which you can purchase at reasonable prices.

It pays to keep asking for a discount before making transactions. Try not to get too emotional, as this is still a business deal, and you want to get the best of the bargain. But above all, have fun, and remember that a wedding is much more than a pretty white dress.
