What are the best cities to teach English in Taiwan? While Taiwan might be very small compared to many other countries, there are many cities and each one has unique features and a way of life different to other cities in Taiwan. If you are thinking of coming to Taiwan to teach English, then knowing what each city has to offer can be useful in deciding where you should work. What city you live in and can directly affect your way of life. This includes how much you earn, how much you save, the kind of working environment you ll find yourself in and the kind of food you ll be eating. Not all cities in Taiwan are equal and some people might prefer one city over another.

The most popular city and the one with the most English teachers is Taipei. If you want to find the city with the most teachers and foreigners, head to Taipei. There are hundreds of not thousands of English schools and businesses all looking for English teachers and some kind of English course. Why is Taipei so popular? Taipei is the largest city in Taiwan and therefore there are many shops, services and goods that appeal to foreigners which aren t found in other smaller cities in Taiwan. Businesses locate their headquarters in or near Taipei. Most of the international traffic coming in and out of Taiwan is via Taipei. Taipei is basically the business hub of Taiwan. It is where all major businesses and companies do their business and along with that comes all the luxuries you typically find in any major city around the world. Taipei is also the most developed and has the best public transport system available anywhere in Taiwan. It was the first city to get a working subway system. This is one of the reasons why many foreigners live in Taipei. It is the easiest to live in if you can t speak any Chinese. However, this all comes at a price and Taipei is the most expensive city to live in.

Once you get outside of Taipei you ll find that the cost of living drops but so does the way of life. Kaohsiung and Taichung are the second and third largest cities in Taiwan. However, their public transport and the city itself is vastly different from Taipei. They are slightly more rural with fewer of the luxuries you may find in Taipei. However, the cities are much better to live in and the quality of life is better. The English ability of most people living in these cities is basic to none. Does this mean you ll have to learn some Chinese to survive? No, but just don t expect the kind of English friendly life that you typically find in Taipei.

If you plan on teaching English in Taiwan make sure that you do some research on where you want to teach. There is much more to Taiwan than just Taipei, however, very few English teachers ever work outside of Taipei and never discover the real Taiwan. Living and teaching outside of Taipei gives you the chance to save more money and experience the real way of life in Taiwan.
