Any serious basketball player or any serious athlete as a matter of fact is probably looking to increase their vertical jump. Having a high vertical jump can transform your game and your ability to perform well. So having said that it is only natural and it is only logical that one would want to increase his vertical jump, but how?
There are many ways to doing that and in reality all of them work. I know it might sound weird but its true, the only real difference is in how good they work because some will work better than others. The best kind of training to increase your jump power is by utilizing a combination of plyometric exercises and heavy resistance training. The combination of both these things can have you flying in no time.
The only set back is that you can't dive into heavy resistance training. I suggest you undertake an amateur fitness program and then slowly move up. Lifting heavy weights without proper form or preparation will lean to nothing but injury and that's something you are trying to avoid. So having said that, make sure to prepare your self.
So after you have prepared yourself what is the next step? Now its time to get down to the program! You need to add some solid weight training and I mean heavy core movements like squats, bench press and dead lifts and combine them with plyometrics, like squat jumps, depth jumps and power push ups. This kind of combination will have your vertical jump skyrocketing in no time.
A vertical jump program can last anywhere from 3 to 5 months. It depends on your goal and level of commitment but it is best not to over do it because this combination is intense and if you over do it you might injure yourself. Try and keep this kind of vertical jump training to a maximum of 3 months. And only perform 2 to 3 sessions a week. Doing this will keep injury safe and make your vertical leap skyrocket.
