Not only is a decorative thermometer useful, but it can serve as a great decorative piece both indoors and outdoors. For this reason, a decorative thermometer can serve as a great gift in all seasons, especially for house-warming parties.

Most people are used to mercury based thermometers, which are simply glass tubes filled with mercury. When the temperature starts to increase, the mercury begins to expand. When the temperature starts to decrease, the mercury begins to contract. It is easy to read off the temperature by looking at a scale on the tube.

However, thermometers can be built differently, which gives you the option of using various thermometers as decorative pieces. Examples of a decorative thermometer are liquid thermometers, such as Galileo thermometers, digital thermometers, and clock thermometers. As they come in various designs, it is easy to find one that matches the ambiance in your garden, kitchen, bedroom, or living room.

For example, if your house has a modern feel to it, the Galileo thermometer serves as the perfect decorative thermometer. There are many designs for it, which result in fun conversations, and add a futuristic element to your room. It is simply a large glass tube filled with liquid and several colored glass spheres. The temperature is read by looking at the lowest floating sphere. And since these spheres come in different colors, it is possible to match this decorative thermometer to your furniture.

Digital thermometers are the easiest to read, which makes them more useful than, though not as attractive as, Galileo thermometers and clock thermometers. They come in all shapes and sizes, which give you flexibility in the location you want to use the thermometer in.

Clock thermometers are perfect in rooms with a slightly archaic and homey feel. These are decorative thermometers that look like clocks, but the hands will tell you the temperature. They work with a spring that senses the temperature.

With these different kinds of decorative thermometers, it is possible to add some extra flavor to your surroundings. At the very least, they will be great conversation pieces!
