A weekend in Margaret River never seems long enough. Surrounded by tall trees, household name wineries and close enough to the ocean that you can almost feel the salt in the air. The township is a mix of tree change greenies, surf addicts and gourmands.

Margaret River is Australia s next big thing in wine regions, tucked inconspicuously within an isolated fist of land that juts into the Indian Ocean. Located just three hours south of Perth, it shows on the map as a tiny dot at the bottom of Australia s largest, least populated state, Western Australia.

Margaret River is the most isolated wine growing area on the planet. This is where some of the world s finest Shiraz is produced, as well as excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

With the cool frost free winters, good soils that hold moisture, low summer rainfall and a long, slow ripening period, the climate around Margaret River is perfect for wine growing. Wine lovers will be in their element with the huge range of distinctive premium wines in the region.
As Margaret River is the prime wine growing region of WA, there are around 90 wineries that will let you sample their produce. Over 15 percent of the country s premium wine is produced in Margaret River.

In addition to the wonderful selection of local wines, Margaret River is renowned for superb surf and fantastic food. Most of the shops are open 7 days a week and you will be greeted with a smiling face and great customer service from local businesses.

If you embark on a tour with a guide, a casual drive through the vineyards and scenic native forests gives the guide time to tell a little about Aboriginal history. You will also learn about the history of wine making in Margaret River.

‘Lake Cave’ in Margaret River is home to a delicate formation of towering karri trees that frame a tranquil lake inside the cave. The underground stairs descend into a surreal chamber which leads into one of the most beautiful limestone caves in Australia.

Famous for its world class surfing conditions, Margaret River is amongst the most popular beaches for surfers in Australia along with Bondi and Surfers Paradise. This spectacular strip of coastline has the most consistent surf breaks in the world.

If you are backpacking or travelling around, you can find seasonal work in and around the Margaret River region. Even though it was originally a timber town, there is seasonal employment in various industries and farms such as dairy, vineyards, wineries and berries.

Harvesting jobs are usually available in Margaret River between February to April which is usually grape picking and from June to August the majority of work is grape pruning. There is also work available in hospitality and tourism, especially in the summer months with visitors to the region are at their peak.
