A Coach hire plan is key to a good school trip. First impressions can never be under estimated. You can bet your bottom dollar that the parents and their offspring are checking out the coach and coach driver. It’s only human nature. The hire coach is taking their little angels off to Timbuktu. The parents have probably not visited the destination and, likely as not, don’t know the route the hire coach is taking. This abdication of responsibility will be completely new to some parents. Others will have seen their older little darlings on many another school trip. Not surprisingly the less experienced parents will probably be the most worried. If the coach hire trip is not well planned out from the outset these parents anxieties will only grow. The parents’ of children going on the coach hire trip need to be reassured that their children will be kept safe. If they witness examples of poor safety procedures, not surprisingly they will be put on their guard and loose their trust in the people organizing the coach trip.
Planning a coach hire excursion is really straight forward. However it is amazing how often the same problems pop up over and over again. Often, to compound things, the teachers arranging the trips are inexperience. This article is, I hope, a resource for those who lack experience in the planning of a slick coach hire trip.
When organizing a coach hire trip, don’t underestimate the selfishness of anyone. That sounds rather a negative, but is meant as a positive. Experienced coach hire veterans will be know the psychology of a large minority of the general public is to park their, often, four wheel drives, as close as possible to their children’s school. When the whole of year seven, 150 little darlings are off on the coaches hired for the trip, that’s potentially an awful lot of metal and rubber moving and parking, reversing and idling near the coach. Then add to the mix, rain, it always rains on the day the coaches! On the coaches’ return, after a lovely day out, poor light, needs to be added to the mix. Put into the pot tired excited children and you get the picture.
I doesn’t matter how many times you write letters to the parents asking them to park well away from the school, the same culprits will keep appearing like a bad penny. Make it clear that no one, other than parents of children with disabilities, can park within a specified distance from the school. This you would think would get the message over, but be scared, be very scared, those hard core parents will not either read, or accept that the ban refers to them. They will continue to try and park very close, or even, in the car park on the morning of a coach trip. The letter will dissuade the majority of the minority, but the hardcore drivers only get the message when a man or women in uniform taps on their window. So as well as a timely letter, you need to factor in a timely request to the police/community police, for help on the day of the coach trip.
Then, and only then, can you be sure that your first item can be addressed and that your coach hire trip starts and ends with just the coaches, the children and parents and the all important teachers with their buckets.
