The environment in which infants & toddlers live, including their clothes, their paraphernalia, they play space and their bedroom should all provide them with stimulation for their young intelligences. This makes sure that their mental growth proceeds hand in hand with their physical growth. That is the reason why taking the child out for a ride is also good. The new smells, sounds and sights that they encounter will stimulate their mind and interest.
Get your baby his personal auto seat
You should not be without a car seat for your infants & toddlers. Otherwise, how do you take him out for a ride in the neighborhood or through town without the safety devices that will protect him from the possible hazards of travel?
The baby seat should make the child at ease enough so that he wont struggle to climb off it in a few minutes of travel. Don't get an auto seat so badly made that even his bottle won't induce baby to climb into that spot. You may get the baby to sit for a brief time but he will end up screaming and crying. That is surely a distraction you don't need while driving. It would be better to get rid of that seat and bring someone so that while you are driving she can keep baby comfortable.
Prior to paying for any child automobile seat, you might consider strapping him unto the seat for a few minutes to see if he does not mind being confined there for a long time. If the test shows positive results, the next thing you should ask the vendor is whether the seat meets the requirements of the Federal Motor Automobile Safety Standards for child restrainers. That section is part 571, standard 213 of the document.
Carrier seats for infants
Infants & toddlers up to 22 pounds have special sleeping seats for them. At that size, infants usually spend most of the time sleeping. These seats normally just slide in and out of their attachments in order not to disturb the sleeping infants. They are also attachable to an universal stroller.
Seat facing the back
Facing to the back is the ideal orientation for young infants & toddlers. Why is this so? Well, because cars rarely accelerate on start-up but they often come to sudden stops. Back facing seats place the back of the seat towards the front so that if the auto suddenly stops, child won't be thrown forward. However, you have to make sure there is a restraining belt and that the belt is attached in case you need to accelerate the car.
Seats facing the front
Obviously, front-facing child vehicle seats are meant for older infants whose muscles can already resist the motion of being thrown forward. Even so, it is always a good idea to make sure the child is secured by his safety belt.
Convertible seats for fast growing infants & toddlers
Such seats should be used by babies up to around 30 pounds. They call them convertible because they are modular and may be adjusted to grow along with the child up to a certain size. Convertibles may also be oriented forwards or backwards.
Booster chairs
By the time babies reach 4 years of age, they have outgrown their baby seats but are not quite prepared to sit on the normal auto seat. They will need a booster seat until they reach 8 years.
