You have two primary choices if you need the benefits of in person violin lessons. You can learn in a group or privately. Both have an unique set of benefits that you'll learn about in this article.

The cost of group lessons is normally the first thing people notice. These tend to be substantially cheaper than one on one lessons, generally at half the cost or less. Many other factors often go unnoticed though.

When you learn in a group, you will develop some of the characteristics of that group. This serves to keep you focused, passionate, and making progress. Often you will make friends in the group who you will talk to outside of sessions, thereby making violin extend to other areas of your life. By asking why they play, what their favorite pieces of violin music are, and similar questions, your motivation can rise by association.

Also, when you play in front of a group, you are going to be more motivated to succeed. It can be embarrassing to play badly, but it can be really embarrassing to play badly for long periods of time, showing no improvement. Should you know the group well, you may also feel like you are letting them down if you don't make progress.

Since you can't call ahead and change the time of group lessons, the schedule is more rigid. Even if you aren't there, the lesson will take place. This may seem like a drawback, but by playing at the same time consistently, you will develop a stronger habit of playing. When it is a habit, you will often see more rapid progress. It instantly puts you in the mindset of learning every time you go, if you always learn at the same time.

Private lessons are more expensive, but they give you more helpful feedback instantly. Your teacher is completely focused on you and your success. They can learn what sorts of things you enjoy when playing, your style, and what difficulties you have playing. This means they can help you to advance faster and with less frustration. Some techniques that you might otherwise struggle with for a long time can be dealt with more quickly through a helpful tip or alternative they may give you. You also can make more specific progress in this environment as they can help you more with your specific style instead of being limited to the style of a group.

You have more control over what happens during private lessons. By this I mean that if you have a lot of questions, feel free to ask. By doing this, you can learn more from your teacher.

In some cases, you can have your private violin instructor teach you at your home. If you're in a time crunch, this makes it easier to get your lessons in. Not all teachers offer this option so be sure to ask ahead of time if you're interested.

Private lessons are more expensive, they can still be well worth your money. Sometimes you will find that you aren't in a position to benefit from taking them though. In some cases, it may be a good idea to take a break from your lessons for a while to absorb and practice all that you have learned. This is assuming that you were either too busy to practice or that you feel you need more time on a certain set of techniques. After this break, you can resume without issues in many cases.
