To begin hooking up your new monitor, you're going to want to unplug your old monitor before you unplug the monitors' video cable. Then once you have your old monitor you're going to have to find some way to properly dispose of it, because some old monitors have noxious gas inside them. There are three kinds of cables that your new computer may have, the first one is DVI which has more of a long rectangular look to it, then there is VGA, which is the most common lowest quality cable, the cables connector has an almost rectangular shape, but its sides slant in, it also has a bunch of pins inside it. Then there is an HDMI cable which is quite small in comparison to the others and it has a sort of unique rectangular shape to it. DVI and VGA cables have the ability to be thumb screwed in.
Finding which of these ports these connectors go into is usually a simple task seeing as they're all quite unique looking, if you can't find the port, you may have gotten a monitor that is not compatible with your computer. If your monitor ever starts making a lot of noise make sure you turn it off immediately, this is more common in older monitors but is still something to be weary of.
